Putting the FUN back in ‘fundraising’

by Shelley Brosius

Because our Maryland Market Money program relies heavily on privately raised funds, it’s no surprise that we here at MDFMA find ourselves devoting a good chunk of our time to fundraising efforts. It’s worthwhile work, and we are proud to lead a statewide effort to help alleviate food insecurity around the state…but anyone in the nonprofit field knows how draining these efforts can be. So we’ve made a conscious effort to make this aspect of our work a little more…well….fun! (Our current inspiration is the enthusiastic group of little artists who covered the pathways at the Pigtown Community Farmers Market with colorful chalk drawings. No bones about it – those kids were having FUN!)

This season, we’ve dreamed up two events that help generate financial support for Maryland Market Money by encouraging folks to go out and enjoy spending time with each other. We’ve planned an outing to Camden Yards to catch an O’s game on June 21st, an event that unites farmers market lovers and O’s fans alike. (Tickets are fast disappearing; they must be purchased through this form by Monday, June 6th if you’d like to participate!) Alternatively, if food is more your thing, we’ve coordinated a statewide ‘dine out’ fundraiser for Thursday, July 14th – the official first annual ‘Feast for Farms & Families’ event! Restaurants throughout the state are generously donating a portion of their proceeds to the Maryland Market Money program and helping us feed more than 17,000 hungry Marylanders this farmers market season. (A full list of participating restaurants is included here, and there are plenty of culinary styles to choose from!)

We’ll continue to get creative about ways to make supporting our programs more engaging, and we can’t wait to see you all out and about as we get things scheduled and booked. Let us know where you’ll be feasting on July 14th..we’d love to come by and talk about all things farmers market with you!
