MDFMA Now Accepting Applications for the 2016 Maryland Market Money Season!

by Shelley Brosius

Here at MDFMA, we’re preparing for another successful year of Maryland Market Money. In 2015, 22 farmers markets across Maryland offered Maryland Market Money to food-insecure Marylanders who used their federal nutrition benefits at the farmers market. If you are market manager who is interested in having your market join our network for the 2016 season, fill out an online application by the end of January and we’ll be in touch!

Here are some reasons why Maryland Market Money might be a good fit for your market:

It helps food-insecure Marylanders stretch their limited food budgets through matching dollars received, making it easier to access fresh, healthy, quality foods;

It enables farmers markets to broaden and diversify their customer base, creating welcoming community spaces and thriving economic centers for market vendors;

It supports local farmers and producers selling at participating markets by helping them to diversify and augment their revenue stream;

It enables communities to establish a positive gathering place for diverse residents of all ages and backgrounds through the establishment of an accessible market; and

It helps local economies grow in sustainable way through the spending of federal nutrition benefits and Maryland Market Money by community residents with local market vendors.

Sounds pretty positive, right? Find out more about what is expected and required of participating markets by visiting our Offering Maryland Market Money at Your Market page, or contact Shelley (sbrosius@marylandfma.org) with your questions!
