Celebrate National Farmers Market Week! August 3-9, 2014

by Maryland Farmers Market Association

National Farmers Market Week is almost here! Secretary Vilsack has declared August 3-9 National Farmers Market Week, proclaiming that “National Farmers Market Week is a great opportunity for farmers markets across the country to host special events to showcase all the tremendous services they provide. Farmers markets play a key role in developing local and regional food systems that support family farms, and help grow rural economies. They bring communities together, connecting cities with the farms that support them and provide Americans across the country with fresh, healthy food.”

In light of this national week of celebration, we’ve scoured the web to check out what other organizations across the nation are doing and compiled a list of ideas to help your market celebrate!

Additional ideas for celebration include:

  1. Hosting a photo contest. The Farming Association of Vermont is hosting a Selfie Photo Contest. Participants take a selfie at their favorite farmers market and can enter it to win a farmers market shopping spree!
  2. Referencing the Seven Days, Seven Ways to Celebrate National Farmers Market Week blog created by the Farmers Market Coalition, featuring a day-by-day media kit. Topics include civic engagement, rural renewal, community engagement, and public health.
  3. Hosting a “Home Grown Celebration” just like Minnesota Grown. Invite local politicians, community members, and farmers market shoppers to compete to see who can make the most creative meals with products purchased at farmers markets!
  4. Sell t-shirts, totes, and other goodies to promote your market! The MDFMA offers various forms of gear, available for purchase here and a portion of proceeds from each sale benefits the MDFMA! Printing gear with your market’s name and logo on it is literally a walking advertisement.
  5. Raffle off a basket full of farmers market goodies, donated by or purchased from the vendors at your market.
  6. Support the MDFMA today by becoming a member! Learn more about joining this thriving community of farmers markets, farmers, organizations, local vendors, and food lovers here.
